The Power of 1%: Small Changes, Massive Results

Every Monday, every new month, or after a holiday, we look for a reason to improve our health. We often set grand, elusive goals that lead to procrastination.

However, true transformation lies in the strategy of Atomic Habits, as described by James Clear.


Why Small Changes Dominate

The core message is simple: 1% improvement every day. This subtle shift compounds, making us 37 times better by the end of the year.

  • Example: 100 fewer calories a day (one slice of bread or one glass of wine less) equals a 5kg weight loss per year, without the feeling of deprivation.


Forget Goals, Focus on Systems

A goal (e.g., I want to lose 20kg) tells us where we want to go. A system (strategy) tells us how we will live.

  • Instead of focusing on the scale, focus on the process: using smaller plates, a 45-minute walk, or daily salad consumption. This turns effort into a lifestyle.


Identity: The Deepest Level of Change

Habits are like the layers of an onion. The deepest layer is not the outcome (weight), but your identity (beliefs).

  • Instead of saying: I am trying to avoid sweets, ask yourself:

    What would a healthy person do?.

    When your identity shifts, healthy choices become your natural response.


The 1st Law: Make it Obvious

Before we can change a habit, we must perceive it. Follow these steps:

  1. The Habit Scorecard: List every habit in your day. Awareness is the first step toward change.

  2. Implementation Intentions: Don't just say: I'll eat healthy.

    Say: I will eat lunch at 13:30 at the kitchen table.

  3. Habit Stacking: Link a new habit to an existing one. Affter I finish my morning coffee, I will drink a glass of water.

  4. Environment Design: Make the healthy choice the most obvious one. Place fruit on the kitchen counter. Prep vegetables and store them in a visible glass container in the fridge.
