About Dr. Elena Philippou
Registered Dietitian & Associate Professor
With over 20 years of clinical experience and an active international research career, Dr. Elena Philippou specializes in translating cutting-edge science into personalized, evidence-based nutrition protocols.
Her approach is designed for those who seek high-level expertise to manage health conditions and optimize their metabolic well-being.
Bridging Science with Clinical Care
Dr. Philippou's career is defined by her dual role as a clinician and an academic. As an Associate Professor at the University of Nicosia, Cyprus, a Visiting Senior Lecturer at King’s College London, UK, and an Adjunct Associate Professor at RMIT University, Australia, she doesn't just stay up to date with research; she is actively involved in it.
Her clinical practice focuses on the powerful synergy between the Mediterranean Diet and Low Glycaemic Index (GI) frameworks. She has successfully empowered hundreds of clients to manage:
-
Metabolic Health: Insulin resistance, Type 2 Diabetes, and sustainable weight maintenance.
-
Clinical Conditions: Cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and rheumatic diseases.
-
Women’s Health: Navigating the metabolic shifts of pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause.
Research in Nutrition
Beyond the clinic, Dr. Philippou is a researcher in the emerging field of Chrononutrition (Intermittent Fasting).
Her current research investigates how meal timing and dietary patterns can slow biological ageing, and improve body composition, cognitive, and mental health.
With over 80 research publications in international peer-reviewed journals (see here) and as the editor of the specialist textbook 'Glycemic Index: Practical Applications' (CRC Press, USA) (see here), she brings a level of scientific rigor to her patients that is rare in clinical practice.
"My goal is to provide my clients with more than just a diet.
I provide a scientifically validated roadmap that aligns your biology with your lifestyle for lasting health."
Education
2012
Pg Cert in in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (CPAD)
University of Hertfordshire, UK
Science is only as powerful as its communication. My Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education has provided me with a specialized toolkit to bridge the gap between high-level research and diverse learning styles. Whether I am lecturing at the University, giving a talk, or consulting in the clinic, I am committed to creating inclusive, engaging environments that empower individuals to master their own learning journey.
2004-2008
PhD in Dietetics
Imperial College London, UK
My research foundation was built at Imperial College London, where I completed my PhD under the mentorship of global leaders in nutrition, including Prof. Gary Frost.
My research, involving three randomized controlled trials (RCTs), focused on how carbohydrate manipulation influences cardiovascular risk and weight maintenance.
These trials provided evidence that a Low Glycaemic Index (GI) diet significantly mitigates heart disease risk - a finding that remains a cornerstone of my clinical protocols today.
2003
Postgraduate Certificate in Behavioural Management of Adult Obesity, with Merit
University of Central Lancashire, UK
Clinical success is rarely about the "what"- it is about the "how." Alongside my scientific research, I hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Behavioral Management of Adult Obesity. This training in Motivational Interviewing and behavioral psychology allows me to support my clients beyond the plate. I understand that sustainable weight management isn't about rigid restriction; it is about the strategic implementation of lifestyle shifts that respect your psychology and your reality.
2001-2002
PgDip in Dietetics with Distinction, Awarded the Van den Bergh’s prize in Dietetics
King's College London, UK
My clinical expertise is anchored in a Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics, a rigorous foundation covering human metabolism, therapeutic nutrition, and clinical assessment. This formal training culminated in a six-month intensive residency at the University Hospital Aintree in Liverpool, where I translated theoretical science into clinical outcomes within a high-pressure hospital setting.
This practical immersion was instrumental in my registration as a dietitian with the UK's Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) (DT08954). This licensure is your guarantee that my practice adheres to the highest international standards of professional ethics, safety, and clinical evidence.
1998-2001
BSc in Nutrition with Distinction
King's College London
UK
My journey in nutritional science began at King’s College London, where I earned my BSc in Nutrition with Distinction. It was here that I developed a rigorous foundation in metabolic science and, crucially, the ability to critically analyze research evidence. This skill remains the filter through which I view every new development in nutrition today- ensuring that the protocols I design for you are not just "trending," but are rooted in proven, high-quality science.
